What was true in 1986 to 1991 can also be true today. One may find a lot of similarities in one modern-day independent record label called SideOneDummy and the old Sub Pop label. Although based in Los Angeles, CA instead of Seattle, this small label’s roster of artists that include (and have included) Anti-Flag, Chuck Ragan, Flogging Molly, Fake Problems, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, the Dan Band, the Horrible Crowes, and the Gaslight Anthem, is proving that the spirit of indie labels is still alive and well. Side One Dummy hasn’t concentrated all of the efforts on bands local to them as Sub Pop did, but the menu of artists do heavily reside in the northeast U.S. Like Sub Pop with the “drop D tuning” philosophy, Side One Dummy’s artist lineup does seem to follow a common theme and/or formula. A little mix of punk, ska, acoustic and sometimes Irish bar bands gives this label a concrete target market. Make no mistake; this target market is the group of consumers that are screaming for change and a new rock boom in the music industry. It gives the public bands that are writing from the heart, such as the Gaslight Anthem and Chuck Ragan. It’s safe to assume that Dave Grohl would approve.
As major labels continue to sign bands that are on the Side One Dummy label, a domino effect could occur. Just like it did with Sub Pop and grunge. When record company “A” signs a band from Side One Dummy and makes a platinum record, then record company “B” is going to notice that and start looking at Side One Dummy artists because their train of thought is; “wow, these Side One Dummy guys are great talent scouts.” A musical movement can take off from there. Being that they already have bands on their label charting high with releases such as “American Slang” by the Gaslight Anthem and “Swagger” by Flogging Molly, it can only compound from there. It’s also important to note that the Gaslight Anthem are currently in the studio with Brendan O’Brien (most notably known for his work with Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine) to record their debut album on the Mercury label.

Just a few of the 7” Records that we’re going to be putting up in our store tomorrow by Noon PST. We’ve had these in stock for a while but I’m not sure why they weren’t available in our store. All that changes tomorrow.
We see you eyeing those Gaslight Anthem “The ‘59 Sound” 7”s. Not to mention our restock of Red and White Fake Problems “The Dream Team” 7”s.
Ok, this is seriously and awesomely important.
Last week we did a little Autumn cleaning and went through a few boxes of test pressings. We decided that it’d be way better that fans have them than them sitting in boxes in our office. With that being said, the test pressings for the albums listed below are up for auction on our eBay.
There’s more though. ALL of the proceeds from the Big D and the Kids Table Fluent In Stroll auction are going to Dave McWane to help cover the cost of his medical bills associated with his fight against throat cancer. Also, a portion of the proceeds from all the other auctions will be going to Dave as well.

The Gaslight Anthem’s iTunes Session is out TODAY at iTunes.
Originally scheduled for a December release, this special set by the band was bumped up by iTunes and SideOneDummy after it was leaked by an overzealous member of press. *shakes fist* A lot of The Gaslight Anthem fans have come to look forward to the covers the band has performed over their career. Without over thinking it too much, the band seems take the mystique of a great song and add their own flavor to it resulting in a cover that only The Gaslight Anthem can pump new life into. Recorded back in July at the Magic Shop in New York, the band laid down some tracks by The Who, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Pearl Jam, a classic rendition of “House of the Rising Sun” as well as a new track and two revised originals.

Scott Heisel, of Alternative Press, jumped on the phone with Benny Horowitz, drummer of The Gaslight Anthem, the other day to talk about the iTunes Session (OUT NEXT TUESDAY!), tambourines, and the future!
If you’ve ever seen THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM live, you know to expect the unexpected. The New Jersey quartet frequently incorporate cover songs into their set, and they play around with arrangements of fan favorites to keep the crowd on their toes. This past July, the band documented some of these left-field ideas in the studio, culminating in the six-track iTunes Session digital EP, out Oct. 18 via SideOneDummy (pre-order here). It’s the band’s final release for the label, too, as they recently inked a deal with Mercury Records. We caught up with Gaslight drummer BENNY HOROWITZ to get the scoop on his band’s new EP, their future plans and just how difficult it actually is to play a tambourine correctly. While you’re reading, take a listen to an exclusive stream of a song from iTunes Session, “Our Father’s Sons.”
AP is also featuring an exclusive stream of a new Gaslight Anthem song entitled “Our Father’s Sons”. Click HERE to listen to the song and read the full interview!
