We Are The Ocean News from SideOneDummy HQ
PRESS RELEASE:
WE ARE THE OCEAN TO RELEASE NEW STUDIO ALBUM SEPTEMBER 18th, 2012. DEBUT VIDEO FOR FIRST SINGLE “THE ROAD”
We Are The Ocean are back bursting through the floodgates with a new line-up, a focused direction, and an album that aims to set a new standard in the quality of rock music. Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow will be the third full-length release of the band, and it’s clear that no stone has been left unturned in the creation of this rock gem.
“This is how we’ve wanted to sound for years,” states guitarist / vocalist, Alfie Scully.
What’s most impressive about the ten tracks that comprise ‘Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow,’ is that they constitute an entirely new beginning for the Essex four-piece, while both paying lip-service to their roots and signaling a bright new future. This is the sound of a young band taking some gigantic risks, and hearing them pay off.
On the topic of gigantic risks, there was no greater gamble for frontman Liam Cromby, bassist Jack Spence, drummer Tom Whittaker and Scully than to part ways with their former singer, Dan Brown, in June. Having recorded the majority of the record with producer Peter Miles (The King Blues, Dry The River, Canterbury), the remaining members of the band felt something was wrong, and decided to move forward as a quartet otherwise they wouldn’t be doing their new songs justice. “It was to do with our personal happiness,” explains Cromby. “When making this decision, we said if this divebombs then it divebombs, but we’ll be happier for it. We didn’t think of it as a brave step. We didn’t care what anyone else thought because we knew it was the best thing for us.”
The difference that the change of line up made is is immediately apparent on Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow. The level musicianship, technical ability, and textural understanding partnered with frontman Liam Cromby’s voice at the center, shows the world that rock music is not dying, but rather very much alive. It’s kicking and being screamed out loud from the collective lungs of We Are The Ocean.
The band’s video their first U.S. single, “The Road,” can be seen via Vevo here and the track can be downloaded via iTunes.
Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow will be available via SideOneDummy Records 9.18.12.

We have several bands on the Warped Tour this year: Title Fight, Anti-Flag, We Are The Ocean and Chuck Ragan. Everyone is snapping pictures of their favorite bands on Warped so we want to see your pictures of our bands. In return, we’ve got some prizes lined up. OC Weekly just posted this great interview with We Are The Ocean. Read it HERE or below!
On tour supporting their second album, Go Now and Live, We are the Ocean are on the verge—of everything. The British band, made up of Dan Brown (lead vocals), Liam Cromby (guitar / vocals), Jack Spence (bass), Alfie Scully (guitar/vocals) and Tom Whittaker (drums) just broke the UK top 10 rock chart, and they’re swinging by Chain Reaction this Sunday at 7 p.m. (WIN TICKETS HERE!) We talk to Dan Brown about their music and their downtime after the jump.
OC Weekly: Where’s your name from?
Dan Brown: It was taken from my email address at the time. We were pretty young, we just thought it sounded awesome.Who are your musical yardsticks?
Bands like Foo Fighters, Green Day, Gaslight Anthem are big influences for me personally. They’re massive rock bands who have huge mainstream following but are also still really credible and doing what they love.Thrice are our local heroes…what was it like working with the same producer as them on your debut? Do you like Thrice?
I love Thrice! We actually toured with them once in the UK so that was a real honour [sic in America!] for us. Working with Brian McTernan on our first record was quite overwhelming, we felt like we weren’t good enough to be there. We were still teenagers and had only been a band for around two years so it was pretty surreal to already be recording our debut album in the States with a great producer. What do you guys do in your downtime?
If you were introducing your band to new fans, what are the top three WATO songs you’d tell them to listen to and why?
I like to spend time with my girlfriend. We eat out a lot. I like to walk my dog and listen to music. Other than that we don’t have much downtime. If we’re not on tour then we’re usually in the studio.
I would probably say “Confessions,” because its quite different to a lot of our other material, I’d like people to know that we can write varied songs and don’t just stick to one sound. I’d also say “Run Away” because it’s probably my favourite song of our lyrically and “Overtime Is A Crime” because it’s one of our heaviest and fastest songs so it’s always fun to play live and get the crowd moving.
From Jack Spence:
01.27 The Annex Wreck Room, Toronto, ON
It took two hours for the Border Patrol to cave into our angelic British faces, and they granted us entry into Canada. They however turned to our American driver Patrick (The Habadasher) and, due his lack of British charm, refused him entry.
Apparently he had a previous indescretion involving urinating on a wall eight years ago, and such devious criminal minds are not allowed into Canada. It was an odd moment, dropping him off at a hotel in America, where he’d probably spend the day hatching more terrible crimes, like telling telemarketers he’s busy when he isn’t, or not seeing his grandmother on her birthday. What a dastardly man.
We continued into Canada with Tour Mum Bryony at the wheel, and soon arrived in a surprisingly snow-free Toronto. The show had been upgraded from Sneaky Dee’s to the Annex Room, so we all had high hopes of a Canadian triumph. Unfortunately, we did not take into account the venue’s strict door policy of searching every nook and cranny on every person that entered.
In fact they nust’ve been doing thorough background checks too, and be taking patrons into windowless rooms to shine a lamp in their eyes and interrogate them; as by the time we went on stage there were approximately six people in the room, and by the time we finished our set, approximately seven. I’m exaggerating, but seriously Annex Room, sort it out yeah?
After the show, we donned our tourist hats, our I LOVE TORONTO t-shirts, grabbed some flimsy disposable cameras, and set off in search of Niagara Falls. Now, I don’t know if it was our lack of sense of direction, but we found it almost impossible to find the giant waterfall. It was like looking for a dwarf among an army of midgets, and it took us hours of scouring before we heard what sounded like a giant bath being run - it transpired we’d been literally circling around it for the past hour, but there was a pesky shroud of mist hiding it completely from our untrained English eyes. The mocking cloud continued to block the waterfall from sight, so we fled, vowing revenge in the morning.
We Are The Ocean - ‘Go Now And Live” LP
Our We Are The Ocean LPs arrived yesterday and we’ve gotta say that this is one of the coolest shades of blue we’ve put out on vinyl. Please note that the original image of this color in our online is a stock color we’re given by the plant. We never really really now how the vinyl color will end up but we think this came out great and compliments the album artwork so good.
